Subaru Love Grows By Giving
Giving comes naturally to a great number of Subaru owners. The proof is in the research, which shows that Subaru buyers are more actively involved in charitable causes than the average car buyer.

When creating its Share the Love program, Subaru looked long and hard at the extensive list of worthy charities — eventually selecting five worthwhile organizations that best reflect the likes and values of Subaru owners. Click the logos for more information.

What is Share the Love?

Subaru created the Share the Love program to help charities and give back to the community. Thanks to the generosity of Subaru customers, $4.6 million was divided among the five charitable organizations last year.

The second annual Share the Love Event runs from November 21, 2009 to January 4, 2010 with Subaru donating $250 for every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased to the customer's choice of five charities, up to $5,000,000. Purchasers must make their charity designations by January 31, 2010. See Subaru.com for details >

National Wildlife Federation

It's no secret that Subaru owners have a natural affinity for the outdoors. For nearly 75 years, the National Wildlife Federation® (NWF) — America's largest conservation organization — has led a grassroots movement of individuals who are passionate about wildlife, nature, and ways in which wildlife and people can thrive.

Subaru support helps NWF meet some of the world's most vital environmental issues, including confronting and adapting to climate change, protecting wildlife species and habitat, and connecting people with the outdoors.

Habitat for Humanity

Socially-conscious Subaru owners agree that decent shelter is essential to people of all backgrounds, races and religions. More than an ideal, it's all about awareness and action.

Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat for Humanity International builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses alongside the hardworking homeowner families. Since its founding in 1976, Habitat has built nearly 300,000 houses worldwide, benefiting more than 1.5 million people.

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

We couldn't ignore the remarkable bond between Subaru owners and their pets. That's why "Share the Love" support for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) made sense.

The ASPCA has been dedicated to helping animals for more than 143 years. Subaru support aids in rescuing animals from abuse, facilitating more humane legislation, sharing resources with shelters — even making advances in veterinary medicine. You may also be familiar with Subaru-sponsored ASPCA events such as "Go Orange for Animals" and Subaru Adoption Days.

Boys and Girls Clubs of America

Young people need to know that someone cares about them. With more than 4,300 Clubs serving some 4.5 million young people across the country, Boys and Girls Clubs of America provide a positive place for kids to find supportive and caring adults who mentor, empower and inspire them to reach their full potential.

Our partnership is a natural fit and supports our owners' desire to provide hope and opportunity to all young people — especially those who need it most.

Meals On Wheels Association of America

The mission of the Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) is simple yet ambitious: to eliminate hunger and malnutrition among America's seniors and others in need.

Subaru donations help fund the tools and information its thousands of local Meals on Wheels programs need to provide nutritious food, warm conversation and regular safety checks.

A Better World

Getting involved and making a difference in these charitable opportunities unites us in our effort to meet the needs of humanity. Caring changes you, and makes you part of something that changes the world.

Subaru Makes Motor Trend History!

We are thrilled to announce that the Subaru Outback claimed Motor Trend's coveted 2010 Sport/Utility of the Year® award. The victory is made even sweeter by the fact that Subaru is the only brand to win Motor Trend's Sport/Utility of the Year two years in a row — a historic first. Last year, the Sport/Utility of the Year title went home with the 2009 Subaru Forester.

The Subaru Outback: Motor Trend's 2010 Sport/Utility of the Year
To judge contenders for the award, Motor Trend's editorial staff conducted an extensive three-phase testing process:
  1. Phase one includes a full tech check and weigh-in, then full track testing to establish baseline data for acceleration, braking, and handling.
  2. Phase two involves three days of road loops offering a range of road surfaces and traffic conditions to evaluate ride and handling, engine and transmission smoothness and responsiveness, wind and road noise, and ergonomics. A dirt-track section tests traction, stability, and braking control systems.
  3. Phase three is all about debate and deliberation among the judges. This year, the editors updated and expanded the judging criteria to six new categories: Design Advancement, Engineering Excellence, Intended Function, Fuel Efficiency, Safety, and Value.

The 2010 Subaru Outback was also named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). It's priced from $22,995* and produced at Subaru's zero-landfill plant in Lafayette, Indiana.

"We are doubly proud and honored to receive the Motor Trend 2010 Sport/Utility of the Year award for the second consecutive year," said Thomas J. Doll, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Subaru of America, Inc. "To win the 2009 award for the Forester was wonderful enough, but to have won for the 2010 Outback this year is truly an outstanding achievement."

Scenic Drive for a Great Cause, photo by Robert Plafta

2010 48hrs of Tristate: A Scenic Drive for a Great Cause

In January, a group of Subaru enthusiasts from the New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania area will settle in behind the wheels of their Subaru vehicles for a three-day charitable drive to help fund cancer research.

The picturesque 1,000-mile route twists and turns through snow-covered New York and Vermont towns — allowing drivers to appreciate the charming views as well as the all-weather, any-road capabilities of their Subaru vehicles.

The 48hrs of Tristate drive, now in its ninth year, now in its ninth year, benefits the American Cancer Society and takes place January 14-17, 2010.

Four of the six Subarus in the Leathers family
This photo shows four of the six Subarus we have in our family. We have owned Subarus since my 86-year-old mother purchased her first Subaru in the 1970s. Her 2004 Outback (not shown) was a present to herself on her 80th birthday.

As you might guess, we have always been pleased with the reliability and performance of every model we have ever owned. Our current Subaru collection includes a 1998 Legacy Outback, a 2004 Outback Wagon, a 2004 Outback VDC Sedan, a 2005 Impreza RS, a 2006 Baja Turbo, and a 2008 Tribeca. We love our Subies!

The Nose Knows: A Green Way to Make Your Subaru Smell Good

Sometimes bad smells in your car can't be avoided. Sure, you can dangle a pine tree air freshener from your rearview mirror or buy commercial drops and sprays. But there is a more environmentally friendly and economical way to improve your car's aroma.

  • Uncover the source. Find what smells and dispose of it or nothing you do will eliminate the odor.
  • Roll up your sleeves. Clean out the inside of your Subaru. Papers and items left in your car can absorb bad smells. Vacuum and wipe down all surfaces thoroughly.
  • Get out the vinegar. Pour vinegar into a bowl and leave it in your closed car overnight. Add a second bowl in the backseat if necessary.
  • Air it out. Remove the bowls and open the windows and doors. The vinegar smell should disappear quickly and take the previous bad aroma along with it.
  • Take a whiff. If the bad smell still lingers, repeat the process.
