New Legacy CVT Earns 31 mpg* Highway Rating

Big news! The 2010 Legacy equipped with Subaru Lineartronic™ CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) achieved a fuel economy rating of 31 mpg* on the highway, while the Outback CVT earned a highway rating of 29 mpg* — a significant improvement for both models.

Subaru Lineartronic CVT engineWith gas prices edging higher and a growing concern for the environment, fuel economy has been a top focus in automotive engineering. State-of-the-art Subaru Lineartronic™ CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) available on select, all-new Legacy and Outback vehicles plays a big role in achieving greater fuel efficiency.

How CVT Works

A CVT features a gearbox with an almost infinite number of gear ratios between two set gear ratios. Electronically controlled and hydraulically operated, the CVT seamlessly moves among ratios, resulting in a smooth ride.

With its almost endless number of gear ratios, a CVT efficiently transmits the power from the engine to other drivetrain components. This results in less wasted power and therefore, reduced fuel consumption.

Electronically controlled CVT is available on select, all-new Legacy and Outback models. Watch for an in-depth feature in the summer issue of Drive magazine — arriving soon!

Road & Track

The 2010 Legacy has grown, but remains true to its roots of providing standard all-wheel drive in a robust package that tolerates abuse and foul weather.

Sporting its first redesign since 2005, the 2010 Subaru Outback's SUV-alternative appeal is as high now as it was when it hit the market 15 years ago.

... like Harrison Ford himself, the Outback has gained in both savvy and physical size since his swashbuckling debut, though neither one appears to be any less willing to tackle genuine adventure.

Insider Tips

Safe Summer Travel with Pets

Whether you're going around the block or across the country, the ASPCA recommends that you keep your pets safe and secure in a well-ventilated crate or carrier. Make sure it's large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in.

In addition:

  • Never leave your animal alone in a parked vehicle. On a hot day, even with the windows open, a parked automobile can become a furnace in no time, and heatstroke can develop.
  • Don't allow your pet to ride with his head outside the window. This can subject him to inner ear damage and lung infections, and he could be injured by flying objects.
  • Don't feed your furry friend in a moving vehicle—even if it's a long drive.
  • Carry a gallon thermos of cold water, or bring along a two-liter plastic bottle of water that you've frozen the night before.
